What are the differences between Isolators, Open Rabs and Closed Rabs?

In the pharmaceutical industry, product safety and quality are paramount. That’s why choosing the right insulation system is so important.

There are three main types of insulation systems

Isolators

Isolators are self-contained units that provide a controlled environment with a physical barrier that separates the process from the external environment. They are used for the most critical tasks such as the production of contaminant-sensitive drugs.

Open Rabs

Open Rabs systems, as the name suggests, have an open configuration with a workspace accessible from the surrounding environment. They are used for tasks that require greater access to the work environment, such as cleaning and maintenance.

Closed Rabs

Finally, Closed Rabs systems have a closed configuration that provides a physical barrier between the external environment and the work area. They are used for activities that require greater protection from the external environment, such as handling sensitive products that still need to be isolated.

The legislation

In terms of regulation, the pharmaceutical industry is regulated by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) in the United States and the EMA (European Medicines Agency) in Europe. Both agencies require the use of isolation systems that meet certain quality and safety standards to ensure the quality and safety of pharmaceutical products.

To monitor the performance of insulation systems, control instruments such as differential pressure monitoring systems, humidity and temperature sensors, and contamination analysis systems (particulate and microbiological) are used. These tools help ensure that the work environment is kept consistent and safe for the production of high-quality medicines.

In conclusion, choosing the right insulation system is crucial for ensuring the safety and quality of pharmaceutical products. The regulation requires the use of insulation systems that meet certain quality and safety standards, and the control tools help to monitor the performance of the system
